As someone who played the original, I cannot recommend this game. The way the leveling system has been reworked removes the part of the game I enjoyed the most, leveling up my team and leveraging that dedicating training to completing more of the story. The original game made me buy this. The original game made me ask for a refund for this. The creator had a great idea: "What if we remove the tactics from the game and replaced it with RNG?" This was the result.

Seeing the negative reviews made me avoid this game since it came out. Those reviews came from people who played either the original or the PSP version and feel like this remaster doesn't live up to them. That's fair. One of the GOATs in the strategy RPG space for a reason. The story is an all timer. The gameplay shows *some* age but that makes sense considering when the original version came out. This is still worth checking out now. Tactical gameplay has certainly iterated past this game, but I can't think of any games in this space that have come near the world and story.

The game is clunky. It's like a less polished version of Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles. There's no fast forward button, you can't restart battles, and there are random videogamey buff/debuff playing cards that randomly spawn all over the battlefield that really suck the wind out of any dramatic story the game's trying to tell. its not the same as the SNES and that's okay. there's more content, more dialogue, more characters. I was put off for years because of the spawning temporary buff cards and the level cap, but they're actually rather tolerable. its not like the AI guns for them or uses them terribly intelligently. reducing the number of classes (cleric/exorcist are now one class, for example) is actually a huge relief, and allowed for...
