A straight improvement from the first game in every way. The bump system has been further refined so even though it's not too different from the first game, its slightly more consistent with how you approach enemies and such. A lot of the foreshadowing and setup of the story in Ys I pays off really well with the climax of this game, which is surprising considering how far they can prioritize a narrative for a game...

Ys II is direct sequel to Ys I, and I thought it was a colossal step up from Ys I. The story is more fleshed out, the gameplay is far more interesting with the addition of magic, there are QOL boosts, and the game just has a lot more content. The gameplay is much better than it was in the first game, however, that doesn't mean it's spectacular. This one has much more content and despite the sometimes annoying combat I would still recommend playing it as it has much more optional content related to one spell.

Much like the original Final Fantasy, Ys I & II have seen quite a few different versions over the years. For those who want to see how it all started, Ys I & II Chronicles is the way to experience it. Ys I lasts just over few hours and Ys II boasts a little longer playtime, but with the game's fast pace, it doesn't outstay its welcome. Great game have it on psp beat it. The continuation of Adol's adventure through the land of Ys to put an end to the black pearl and its power and the events that have unfolded prior to Adol and his arrival.

Ys 2 is a vast improvement over Ys 1 in almost every respect - combat, plot, music, levelling, dialogue, and especially boss battle tuning. Every boss felt fair (unlike the first game), even ones with bullet hell attacks because they had learnable patterns. I'd highly recommend Ys 1+2 chronicles for anybody who was a fan of action RPG games from the NES/SNES era, even if you have to play through the first game on...

Early Ys game is really special to me, I love interactions with NPCs in this game. And i think all Ys games has the same attraction in this aspect. The way you move around and the pacing in this game feels fast and really suits its playstyle. Cool spells introduced in Ys II like turning to a Roo to progress certain areas amuse me. Still the addicting bump system but now with fire magic to spice things up....
