Marvel's Midnight Suns

10/10 gameplay loop. 0/10 story, dialogue, and character arcs to the point where I didn't finish. You can tell Disney really neutered the characters so the game was safe for all ages. I would love to see this gameplay loop applied to a different setting with more weight.

I LOVE THIS GAME! That's basically it. That's my review in a nutshell. I bought and completed Midnight Suns on the PS5, Series X and now on PC and I still enjoy every second of it. The characters, the writing, that there is a proper hub you can explore (The Abbey), the combat - oh my god, the combat! I was hooked from the very first tutorial encounter and it gets even better the further the game...

This should have been an easy hit for those like me that love turn-based tactics, card games and narratives, but BOY are all the characters unlikable. I really tried not to be too dismissive of the whole "cringey marvel quips", but it is really hard to take any narrative seriously when nobody in the game does.

As a massive fan of XCOM:EU and XCOM2 and deck builders I really wanted to like this game. I tried to find the fun. Desperately. But the game tries to do too much and the fun is only had during a few small moments in some battles. Namely when you get a good draw and feel like the game mechanics aren't as restrictive for once. In the end, I firmly believe there are better ways to spend your time. Sadly.

I’ve never had a game tell me to turn the difficulty up when I level up. That seems like bad game design. The combat also just throws more bad guys at you over and over again instead of making the bad guys on screen stronger. Terrible UI choices too. You can’t pause during cut scenes, you can’t fast travel during the day, and the save system is awful. If you fail a mission, you have to retry it endlessly unless...

I got this game for free originally during a promotional run from Epic Games and I loved it so much that I bought it on Steam so that I could get the achievements! It’s unexpectedly become one of my favourite games. The gameplay loop is so satisfying, the mysteries are really fun to explore, the crafting is interesting but not too difficult for people who don’t enjoy fiddly mechanics, the story is great, the combat...

Context: I love XCOM & XCOM2. I bought this game on discount and bacause it was developed by Firaxis. I don't read the Marvel comics. Aside from the cool graphic effects and could run smoothly on my old GTX1650, I find this game kinda of boring and overrated. The combat is predictable aside from bosses. The resource management for upgrade forces the player to run around The Abbey everytime between combat to upgrade...
