The historical battles in the Alexander campaign are a ton of fun — you actually get to fight the famous ones and they feel properly epic. Heading east into all that unknown territory is just as good, because the map opens up and you never quite know what’s waiting out there. It plays more like a chessboard than the original campaign too, your first few moves really matter and you can actually plan a clean opening...

It's very solid despite being smaller than the base game and barbarian invasion. Even if you are not into modding, the vanilla campaign is great for 1 playthrough, and historical battles are 100% worth playing.

Overall: Worth a playthrough if you enjoyed the base game, feels historical and high pressured! The great: Cool (but small) Macedonian roster with highly effective (and satisfying) phalanx. High stakes as Alexander must never die (plus a timer). New map, The historical battles and sequence battles are welcome. Brian Blessed!
