Amazing game! I wish there were more jrpgs like this one, the combat was very unique for a jrpg, like xcom but not, and upgrading the units was extremely satisfying!

Recommended, I think there's some rebalancing which makes shocktrooper viable in this game compared to older VC1.

Genuinely an improvement over VC1. It's very rare that I disagree with popular criticisms of a game but this really is better than the first - longer, too.

I loved Valkyria Chronicles 1, I highly recommend that game if you like turn based tactical combat games with some skill mixed in. VC4 gets a recommend because gameplay wise it takes the 1st game and builds on it, and the main source of joy for me in this game is the combat. The game looks and plays smoothly which is great. Ok/meh at times, but downright braindead retarded at others. There's a certain joy in packing 3 shocktroopers together to viciously ♥♥♥♥ down with a flank, and using the tools that you do have to make a good push, but so far, there's never been a point in time where I'm like "This is amazing", rather, it ranges from, "This is decent." to "How brain damaged were the devs when they made this?" Hey. This game sucks. This is the most On Rails "Strategy" game I've ever played. If you want to play something that doesn't want you to be 'good' at the game, and instead just experience the story.
