Sea of Stars is a starship roguelike, a sandbox adventure game of interstellar exploration and combat. Travel from star to star, upgrade your ship with new systems and weapons, build up your flotilla with allies and mercenaries, and take on a variety of alien menaces.

Sea of Stars update - version 1.1.2 released!

Today's update brings a slew of improvements. The most visible among them is an entirely new step-by-step tutorial that guides you through the various user interfaces in the game. Full change list below: • New "How to Play" tutorial sequence, replaces old tutorial mode • Added mouseover "tool tip" on ship palette in combat • Fighter icons are now a different size from ships • Home worlds / special places now play music when you go back • Added a rare special encounter, "Vortex Beast" • Additional script functions for timed events • Star map filter buttons retain state in between games • Moved hard-coded UI strings to english.txt • Improved Pirate insignia • Fixed crash on fleeing carriers • Fixed fleeing carriers launching fighters when off the map • Fixed carriers launching fighters while cloaked • Fixed placeholder graphics on Muktian fighter bay

A simple 3D version of Infinite Space 2, after getting used to the sometimes quirky interface it quickly felt familiar again and gave me the same joy as the second game. I did notice that rare events occur much more in this one, but that keeps things interesting.

I found many hours of enjoyment in the first two Infinite Space games, and this is more of the same - now with 3D graphics. Its fundamentally the same proto-roguelite formula: pick a starship, explore a procedurally-arranged sector hoping for the wacky random drops to align, and then desperately try and head off whatever end-game condition you stumbled into. I think the transition to 3D graphics is a bit of a mixed...

Everything about this game is inferior to its predecessor. Everyone has already made plenty of valid criticisms of the game but here I go anyway: • 3D makes everything more complicated and time-consuming without adding any value whatsoever. • The UI is TERRIBLE. It's weirdly amateur compared to Weird Worlds. It's clumsy, time-wasting, space-wasting, poorly organized, and just UGLY. The flatness and transparency...
