After Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina, fell to the Union, in early 1865, Jefferson Davis belatedly handed over the supreme command or the army to General Lee. This could not stop the Union armies pressing on through North Carolina, capturing Fayetteville, Bentonville, Goldsboro and Raleigh by mid-April.

The closing campaigns of the war now benefit from several improvements to command and support-unit behaviour. • Exposed generals will try to escape as enemy forces approach. • Formation changes work correctly when infantry share a hex with an unattached general or artillery battery. • Artillery batteries attach to infantry reliably, and reinforcement generals arrive with their command abilities intact.
